These are so easy to start......
I used to build them..... been a while though.
Fuel on, a little choke, in neutral, roll the crankshaft around a couple of revolutions - to draw fresh mixture into the cylinders, roll it over to position the pistons ~ 1/2 way to TDC, turn the ignition on, throttle to about 1/4 open, raise the kick starter to a full stroke engagement, and kick it over = piss easy.
Except for the horrendous fuel consumption of 9 Km a liter with a stock engine (5:1 compression side valve) - they are one of the best bikes ever.......
Fuck they were nice.... AND people go, "Oh it's a rigid frame" (no rear suspension) - but they had suspension allright - by going "just so" with the air pressure in the back tyre, so it had a little bit of spring and a little bit of flex in the side wall, that was a primary source of "suspension", and the secondary form of rear suspension was the thickly greased "sprung" seat post.... that had "suspension travel" and the the grease was the "dampener" - like the oils in "shock absorbers".
Like I was involved with developing formula one suspension systems for modern motorcycles, but people underestimated just how good and how nicely handling a 45 (cubic inch ~750 cc) WL or WLA motorcycle really was....
AND despite the hype, you really ride and steer and attune yourself to the bikes handlingcharacteristics, through your arse...
I still have an old AMF in the barn just stitting.
