I think Dan Rather said it best (not sure he even realized it until later) during his live report, when he stated the buildings came down as if in a "controlled demolition". Listening and watching later in slow motion, as the buildings came down, did I notice multiple explosions at different levels of the buildings. Only several years later, while not caught in the emotion of the moment, did I realize what he was saying, and I agree.
