African nations plan to form confederation amid confrontation with ECOWAS

The three West African states of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are mulling the idea of forming a confederation. The move came amid their current confrontation with the regional ECOWAS bloc of West African nations.

In January, the three countries formally quit the ECOWAS organization. Niger was especially critical of it for slapping sanctions on the countries and has vowed never to return to the bloc.
