I thought I’d talk about a popular piece of fiction that is unacceptable for the mainstream. I am a big fan of the fantasy adventure genre in books, movies, video games. I really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit films. However, they also make me lament that my own favorite series will probably never see a film or TV adaptation in my lifetime because its not politically correct. My favorite author is a fellow by the pen name R.A. Salvatore. His most popular work is the Legend of Drizzt, a series of over 30 novels. Most of them have been New York Times best sellers. One of the reasons his novels are popular are for his depiction of the dark elves, or “Drow”, one of those most iconic races in all of the fantasy genre. Some in your audience may have never heard of them, and that doesn’t surprise me. Here are some introductory points on the Drow for the unfamiliar. Their primary deity is Lolth, the demon queen of spiders. She used to be the Queen of the Elven Gods until she tried to usurp her husband, the King of the pantheon, but was thwarted and cast down to the abyss. To mark their treachery, Lolth and her mortal followers who aided in her coup had their skin turned jet black and their eyes became vulnerable to sunlight, and so became a subterranean people. Drow society is a brutal matriarchy. Only women can lead a noble house, become members of the very powerful clergy, or sit on the ruling council. The women rule the men with an iron fist. Lolth blessed the females of her species, giving them an extra head of height and an extra 50 pounds of muscle over the males. The females also keep the males in line with whips. Not normal whips mind you, but magical whips ending in multiple living snake heads that bite you and inject pain-inducing venom which each lash. For the males who really don’t get with the program, the priestesses will turn you into a Drider, which basically turns you into a giant spider from the waist down. The pain of the transformation can be permanently mind shattering. This is all good because Drow find pain and torture to be funny and entertaining. Drow society is incredibly murderous. When Lolth was first cast to the Abyss, she witnessed a nest of demon spider hatchlings devouring each other. Lolth decided to apply this survival of the fittest mindset to her own people. Drow are highly fertile and procreate much more often and easily than surface elves, but they also lose as many Drow lives at the hands of other Drow as they lose to outside forces. The way you climb the social ladder is by assassinating whoever is above you. If the middle brother wants to ascend to “Elderboy” of the house, he just has to kill his older brother. When the “Matron Mother” leading the house grows old and weak, she is killed by her strongest daughter.
