How much of this is just the society being democratic? Not the party, but voting and elections.
The idea that popularity equals superiority is core to democracy. There are more of us, therefore we're right. In every other system, it is the few who rule, and they are ideally included among the ruling few by prevailing over some test of merit. This cultivates a radically different culture where it is abnormal to suggest that popularity proves anything other than mediocrity.
