Brazilians carry the can at unusual street party
Northeastern Brazil’s Madre de Deus was the site of an unforgettable and extremely noisy fashion show on Sunday, as locals paraded their aluminum can suits around the island. The annual ‘Bloco da latinha’ street party was born in 1997 over concerns about the amount of litter left behind after Carnival, its more famous big brother.
A group of friends began collecting cans, attaching them to their clothing. As the trend grew, so did the amount of cans used, leading to these noisy and strange-looking but environmentally-conscious suits.
The cans are empty, of course, otherwise the parade would be more of a strongman contest.
