Cow attends Vatican prayers
It was an extremely mooving occasion.
St. Peter’s Square hosted an unusual guest among the faithful for prayers on Sunday. A cow named Ercolina had been invited to the Pope’s Sunday Angelus, along with a group of farmers, as part of a Europe-wide protest against rising costs, cheap imports and red tape.
Ercolina has become a well-known symbol of the protests in Italy, accompanying the farmers to various locations to raise awareness of the issues. Her mother, also named Ercolina, was the star of protests against EU milk quotas in the late 1990s, so this talent for promoting causes clearly runs in the family.
‘Giving us the approval to enter and attend mass in St Peter’s Square – this is an invitation that happens once in a lifetime,’ said Roberto Rosati, spokesman for the Italian protest movement. ‘With this blessing we can find the strength to win the game.’
