Crimean Bridge stronger than ever after failed attack
On October 8, 2022, a Ukrainian attack destroyed part of the Crimea Bridge, which links the Crimean Peninsula with mainland Russia, via the Kerch Strait. The damage to the bridge was extensive, but despite initial media reports, not total. Within mere days, temporary repairs reopened the bridge to partial traffic, and soon the bridge was well on the road to recovery… literally. Giant pieces of the superstructure were transported by road to be lifted into place, a gargantuan effort of logistics and engineering.
At its May 2018 auguration, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, ‘This makes Crimea stronger, and we are closer to each other.’ In May 2023, as repairs were completed, those words ring truer now more than ever.
