Disney invents floor that lets you walk without moving
From the minds that brought you Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain and several suspiciously hairy ‘princesses’: a floor that doesn’t go anywhere. But actually good. Holotile is a solution to the age-old problem of realistic movement in virtual spaces, allowing natural walking, on the spot, without actually going anywhere. The floor is made up of multiple small pieces that move and react to walking, measure movement and apply appropriate forces to keep the user in place. Or, they can be programmed to move objects around the floorspace. Multiple people can independently move on the floor, all while not actually moving.
A video from Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot shows off the floor as he describes its potential for use in virtual reality, imaginative dance routines, annoying someone on a chair, and moving inanimate concrete blocks slightly to the right. In hindsight, that was probably a lackluster way to end the presentation.
