DIY Solar Heater Wall (NO SOLAR PANELS needed!)

Published on 13 Jan 2024 / In Film & Animation

This shop was already here when we moved in, but it had a dirt floor and was unheated. Once we got it paved, we had to figure out a smart heat source! Thanks to Ryan, we now have a sweet solar heater wall!

i thought this was very fun to watch, i have seen many videos like this but this one had a slightly different spin on it that i found interesting.

but i think there are a few more things it could use to make it better.

Not sure about the summers there, but what scraps all the radiant heat it can in the winter will also soak up all the heat in the summer, and while the temperatures might not be that high in summer, the temperature rise in those panels could be quite high..... They need a way to keep the sun off in the summer... Leaving my car parked in the sun in Australia on say a 35*C day it will get easily hot enough inside the car to pop 50*C domestic thermometers.... And when it gets to 40 - 45*C..... well the car has a white sheet placed over the north and westerly windows....

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: yeah i agree and maybe they have something else for that during other seasons of the year. i also thought that maybe they could create power using that method via thermal electric devices or perhaps some kind of sterling engine kind of deal built into the design, i'm not sure this was his home or if this was his garage but it looked like it was maybe a garage.

@KEEPER: Depending on the lattitude and orientation towards the sun - it can get savagely hot in "solar oven" set ups... Melt the polycarbonate etc... It's a shed set up and designed as a house. Probably has more to do with the climate than anything.

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: honestly i would still rather just live somewhat under ground like the earthship design works lol, the structure doesn't have to be built the exact same way with the same materials, it just needs to follow the same philosophy design structure for it to work. obviously the goal is to make it warm but not too warm that it's unbearable and cool but not too cold as the same flaw in the design, i like some of the invention and automated process in this and like to see it in other designs.

@KEEPER: The polycarbonate - there might be a Infra-Red high transmissance polycarbonate, with a THIN inner wall of it and the tougher corrugated gear on the outside. Double glazing is really effective - especially in marginal harvesting areas..... Low sun level in winter time, short winter days...
