So... For Elon as CEO his obligation is to act in the best interests of his company. Immediately hiring a bad 'temp' allows a lot more productivity than waiting even one year for someone to be trained up for the job.

So; Elon is correct in his role as a CEO regarding the best currently available option. From the standpoint of someone invested in the future of America and it's peoples... I would give 50/50 it's entirely possible that a global hegemony/monopoly on AI could make it so that America's future could be so impressively secured that no one has to work again... (ignoring the fact that would completely destroy our culture and undermine most of America's greatest feature of social mobility) it could make the country the most profile and stable in the world. A fat lazy bully with an AI cudgel (instead of pre-Rosenberg Nuke dominance).
The country would continue to rot from the inside until it collapses though.
On the other side if AI hegemony/dominance was not achieved... imagine all IT jobs gone, all companies pulling out of the economy and taking as many nature resources that they "own" with them... It would likely take hundreds of years to recover if recovery was possible (legally, extra-legally... it's kind of hard to guard something personally while you live on the other side of the world, desperate, starving people have been known to do some incredible things).
So... Elon is correct in his path 110% for immediate results, which are prefered with any 'race' (spacerace, race to the moon, race to build the atom bomb, etc) but if only the right now is considered the best outcome possible might not be an actual victory/success.
