Expanding a fanbase VS replacing one

I'm not against trying to expand the fanbase. If you see some unserved niche out there, by all means create new products to cater to them. But when you start turning your existing products into something that no longer appeals to your existing fans in an effort to try to appeal to new ones, you are just asking to go broke.
