Fascists Killed Catholic Priests in Italy

In 1923, Father Giovanni Minzoni was beaten and murdered by the squadristi, the militia of the National Fascist Party. The attack took place at 10 p.m. as the priest was returning from his rectory with his parishioner, Enrico Bondanelli. Two squadristi ambushed him, striking his back with stones and clubs so violently that they fractured his skull. His parishioner, Bondanelli, was also beaten. Father Minzoni died around midnight, surrounded by parishioners who tried to help him. His last words were: "With an open heart, with a prayer that will never leave my lips for my persecutors, I await the storm, the persecution, perhaps even death, for the triumph of Christ's cause."
Benito Mussolini attributed the attack to "unknown assassins," vowing that they would be ruthlessly pursued and brought to justice. However, despite their identification, the murderers were never punished.
During the 1924 elections, the squadristi sought out Father Giuseppe Arena to punish him for his alleged political opposition. Breaking into his rectory, they humiliated, beat, and murdered Fathers Federico Mistrorigo and Francesco Regretti. As a result, these squadristi were excommunicated by Bishop Ferdinando Rodolfi of Vicenza.
However, the fascists killed even more priests during the Italian Social Republic. On January 30, 1944, Father Pasquino Borghi was shot. On March 27, 1944, Father Pietro Rizzo, the parish priest of Jolanda di Savoia, was executed by firing squad as part of the Goro retaliation. A pious and humble man, Father Rizzo described fascism as pagan statolatry, echoing Pope Pius XI’s definition in the encyclical Non abbiamo bisogno.
Father Elio Monari was taken to Villa Triste in Florence, where he was tortured. However, the largest massacre of priests occurred in Marzabotto between September 30 and October 10, 1944, carried out by the National Socialists with the support of local fascists. During the Marzabotto massacre, National Socialists, aided by fascists, killed Fathers Giovanni Fornasini, Ubaldo Marchioni , Giuseppe Lodi, and Ferdinando Casagrande .
