‘Fiddling while Rome burns’ | Macron parties in Congo
French President Emmanuel Macron is no stranger to angering the public, but this time he’s managed to annoy people on two continents. At the end of a visit to the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, Macron went to a bar in the town of Bandalungwa with Minister of Communication and government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya. Footage of the pair’s partying was captured and shared widely on social media, where it has drawn ire from both the Congolese and French people.
Congo is currently besieged by conflict, while Macron’s home country has come to a standstill over his deeply unpopular pension reforms. After all, what does that matter when there’s boozing to be done? The phrase ‘Fiddling while Rome burns’ springs to mind.
