Florida man arrested after stealing truck with two kids inside
A Florida man has been charged with kidnapping, after stealing a truck with two small children inside, according to authorities. On Monday night in Tampa, a father hailed down Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Pazmino Alvarez and reported that his pickup had just been stolen, along with his two children, aged 4 and 8.
According to a press release from the sheriff's deputy, Deputy Alvarez pursued the allegedly stolen 2011 white Chevrolet Silverado and made a traffic stop ‘within a short period of time.’
The suspect was identified by the sheriff's office as Kevin Smith, 37. During the arrest, captured in bodycam footage, one of the napped kids can be heard telling the deputy, rather matter of factly, ‘that's not my dad.’ The two youngsters were safely reunited with their father, while Smith, who has a criminal record that dates back nearly 20 years, has been taken into custody on charges of grand theft motor vehicle, and grand theft child (also known as kidnapping).
