Gabriele D'Annunzio, one of the forerunners of fascism, was a communist

Gabriele D'Annunzio was a precursor of fascism. His dictatorship in the Italian Regency of Carnaro served as an inspiration for Benito Mussolini's regime in Italy. It was D'Annunzio who adopted the title of Duce before Mussolini; in fact, the latter assumed it precisely inspired by D'Annunzio.
The Carta del Lavoro, drafted by Giuseppe Bottai, was influenced by the Charter of Carnaro, which served as the constitution of the Italian Regency of Carnaro. Bottai himself, author of the Carta del Lavoro, wrote in 1938: “The declarations of the Charter of Carnaro constitute the first expression of the new spiritual and legal order of the Italians.”
The Italian Regency of Carnaro was the first state to recognize the Soviet Union — and, reciprocally, the Soviet Union was the only state to recognize the Regency. In fact, in 1919, the Regency even sent weapons to the Soviet Union.
Vladimir Lenin, during the Congress of the Third Communist International, declared: “In Italy, there is only one revolutionary: Gabriele D'Annunzio.”
On June 9, 1920, in an interview given to Randolfo Vella, D'Annunzio stated: “I am in favor of communism without dictatorship [...] It is my intention to make this city a spiritual island, from which an eminently communist action may radiate to all oppressed nations.”
