Greek coast guard fires on Turkish ship
Tensions between Greece and Turkey continue to escalate, with Ankara claiming that one of their ships came under ‘harassment fire’ from the Greek coast guard.
Mobile phone footage taken aboard the ‘Anatolian’, a small cargo ship, shows a vessel from the Greek coast guard sailing next to them, with the crew of the coast guard ship opening fire, leaving bullet holes in the window and ceiling of the vessel’s bridge. After the incident, two ships from the Turkish coast guard were dispatched to assist, however the ‘Anatolian’ had already left the area by the time they arrived.
The Greek coast guard has denied indiscriminately opening fire, saying that the ‘Anatolian’ was acting ‘suspiciously’ and did not comply with orders to leave Greek territorial waters. The coast guard was then forced to fire warning shots ‘in a safe area,’ however the ship still would not change course, and refused to allow an inspection. Eventually, the ‘Anatolian’ was escorted to Turkish waters. The Greek coast guard said it informed the Turkish authorities about the incident. Meanwhile, the Turkish authorities are demanding an investigation into the incident.
