Civilian GPS was originally supposed to have a precision of 100meters, nowadays it's good within 1 meter, and some small aircraft can use this precision to land entirely on autopilot. There's a lot of things that made this possible, on one part new technology, and on the other simply removing road blocks.

original GPS did not use satelites, in fact most still dont... the planes might use that, but vehicle GPS still mostly use cell towers...

Yeah it's ALL remarkably clever... I saw a thing on how they can locate you position fairly accurately, from a single tower..... no triangulation from 3 towers... I can vaugely remember the contents of the article... And the technique might not be anywhere as a 3 point location system, but it's pretty damned good.. and I think it's been improved since then...
