Iran’s embassy in Saudi Arabia reopens after 7 years
After seven years of strained relations, the Iranian embassy in Saudi Arabia reopened its doors, marking the occasion with a ceremony on Tuesday. Alireza Enayati, former envoy to Kuwait and Deputy Foreign Minister for Regional Affairs, will reportedly be the new ambassador, but there is as yet no official date for the reopening of Riyadh’s embassy in Iran.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed in 2016, after a group of protesters stormed Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran over the execution of a popular activist, but a China-brokered deal in March saw the two sides agree to restore ties.
