Judge Napolitano - Pepe Escobar
Pepe Escobar is an internationally renowned Brazilian journalist and geopolitical analyst, acclaimed for his unflinching reporting and incisive commentary on global power structures. With decades of experience covering war zones, regime changes, and energy geopolitics, Escobar has become a distinctive voice in the analysis of Eurasian affairs and the multipolar realignment of global power. He is best known for his long-running column The Roving Eye at Asia Times, where he tracks what he calls the “New Great Game”—the intensifying strategic contest for dominance across the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond.
Escobar has reported from the ground in over a hundred countries, with particularly deep coverage in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Russia. He was among the earliest Western journalists to write about Osama bin Laden before 9/11 and to interview legendary Afghan resistance leader Ahmad Shah Massoud. His writing combines deep historical insight with an on-the-ground understanding of the social and political realities in regions often distorted by mainstream narratives.
A central concept in Escobar’s geopolitical framework is “Pipelineistan”—his term for the sprawling, often-contested network of oil and gas pipelines that define the economic lifeblood and strategic leverage of nations, particularly across Central Asia. He argues that much of Western foreign policy in these regions is shaped by a desire to control or bypass strategic energy corridors, reducing reliance on Russian energy and circumventing OPEC. While the theory has its critics, it remains an influential lens through which to understand energy-driven conflicts and alignments.
In his recent 2025 dispatch, “From Sana’a to Saada — Yemen During Wartime,” Escobar offers a searing and poetic journey through a land ravaged by war yet unbroken in spirit. Drawing attention to Yemen’s ancient identity and unyielding resistance, he writes:
“Yemenis were the first to write in Yemeni Arabic letters – the letters of Musnad, the Ancient South Arabian script. They documented their own history so it won’t be distorted in the future, as much as contemporary Yemenis document their history of plunder by the Western oligarchy and its despicable Arab regimes surrogates.”
His report captures the cultural pride and historical depth of a nation too often reduced to headlines of humanitarian crisis. With fierce clarity, Escobar underscores Yemen’s tenacity with a parting reminder:
“Rule number one: Don’t mess with Yemen. Rule number two: DO NOT mess with Yemen.”
Whether reporting from the heart of Eurasia or the war-scarred landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula, Pepe Escobar continues to challenge dominant paradigms, offering readers a panoramic and often provocative perspective on the forces shaping our world.
