It was ONLY 20 years from when Charles Blériot, in 1909 flew his tiny little plane 30 miles across the English channel, until Kingsford Smith and Co., flew from America, to Australia, across the Pacific Ocean in 1929.
An enormous amount of research and trials into aircraft development went on over those years, especially during WW1....
