As a bebop trained sax player, one of my favorite jazz sax players in history was Cannonball Adderley. His brother Nat played coronet in the group and though Julian (cannonball) was the leader of the group, the brothers were both deservedly world famous. After Cannonball died, Nat went on to have a decent career, but he wasn't the same on stage without his brother. I did see a live recording of Nat addressing the audience between songs, and he referred to himself unabashedly as a legendary genius. This may be true, but as a student of jazz history, I would not agree with Nat, especially when compared to his brother and other greats like Bird & Dizzy & Sonny Stitt. My point with this anecdote is to point out how absolutely terrible it looks when a man strokes his own ego on his own stage. I think it comes off as a lose/lose move. If you're as badass as all that, you really never have to say it in words, and doing so just comes off any number of ways wrongly.
