Massive casualties as Russian missile strike destroys Ukrainian military training center
Russian forces have struck a military training complex in Ukraine, resulting in over 300 casualties. Two Iskander ballistic missiles struck the School of Military Communications and Information Technology in Poltava on Tuesday morning, which housed the 179th Training Center for Ukrainian signalmen, destroying large parts of the complex. Local reports indicate that hospitals in Poltava are handling a large number of casualties. Reuters put casualty figures at least 50 dead, and 271 wounded, calling it ‘the war's deadliest single attack this year.’ According to the Russian Defense Ministry, several foreign instructors were at the facility, instructing the Ukrainian soldiers on communications, electronic warfare and drone operations.
Former MP and deputy commander of Azov battalion Igor Mosiychuk, who claimed that there were over 600 casualties, criticized the Ukrainian military for allowing so many high-value targets to gather in a single undefended location, however others have downplayed the military significance, with President Zelensky’s wife Elena saying that Russia had targeted ‘an educational institution and a hospital.’ Following the strike, Zelensky has requested more Western military aid, including capabilities to launch ‘long-range strikes’ into Russian territory.
