To the thought Popp raises about women turning a switch, and going from your wife to your cold blooded adversary, and I think the answer can be simple and complex, but the thing that popped into my mind is something TFM talked about: the stages of moral development.

Men have a higher sense of justice than women, and like children, women can be ruthless about getting what they want, whereas men operate on a different level (3 higher stages of moral development).

I saw this illustrated on a blog about The Price Is Right. A woman wrote that she thought the tactic of outbidding the previous bidder by $1 as a perfectly acceptable strategy, but commenters, men, said that it was playing dirty. She reasoned that the point wasn't playing fair, it was winning, and she seemed fully incapable of understanding why the men in her comments saw this as a dirty tactic.

There is much more to this, like how love and infatuation are so different; women tend to feel infatuation (at best) and that's an emotion that can run hot and cold very suddenly, whereas men are romantic, and sacrificial lovers, which is harder to simply switch off. My point here is that women moralize differently than men do. There are intrinsic reasons why women can do this that men cannot comprehend because we lack the amorality of a typical woman. Not saying women are bad, they are as they're made. our mistake is in expecting that they can reason as men do.
