Fertilisers - are only useful on nutrient deficient soils - unrested, over worked, intensive agriculture.
NPK - Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium - they chemically force the plant to grow - big and green, when there is more or less nothing left to grow in. The soils have NO organic content and are nutritionally deficient.

The issue is not as simple as it sounds - you see the plants do not need fertiliser in GOOD soils rich in organic matter.

They only get assisted to grow - as in plants grown in deficient soils = e.g. the quality of sand, with fertilisers grow nutritionally deficient foods....

AND the bad part is - the USA's agricultural soils are so over worked, that they are more or less sand... and if you take away fertilisers, NOTHING will grow in the soils.

It not BAD, it's mega bad.

Once the soil is depleted, without fertiliser to artificially super charge the soils, you don't get shit crops, you get almost NO crops.

And intensive agriculture revolves around cheap energy in the form of oil. The amount of energy input from oil is like 2000 units to get 1300 units of food energy out of it.

I think I can dig this one up and upload it.

"Robert Numan" "The History of oil"

Plants NEED that thick layer of soil mixed in with organic matter that goes down 20 - 30 cm or more.
