Papua rebels release new footage with kidnapped NZ pilot
Separatists in Indonesia’s Papua region have released a new video of the New Zealand pilot being held hostage by the group. Phillip Mehrtens was abducted by the Free Papua Movement (OPM) last month after landing in Nduga district for the domestic Susi Air service. In the latest footage, said by OPM to have been shot on March 6, he reiterates the demands of his kidnappers.
‘OPM requests the United Nations to mediate between Papua and Indonesia to work towards Papuan independence,’ said Mehrtens. He also said that ‘No foreign pilots are permitted to work and fly in Papua until Papua is independent,’ and added that he was ‘being taken care of as well as can be expected given the situation.’
