Police clash with public after removing flowers from Victory Day memorial
The Monument to the Liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from the German Fascist Invaders, shortened to ‘Victory Memorial’ for obvious reasons, is a focal point for Victory Day celebrations in Riga.
Many, however, see the monument not as a memorial to the Second World War, but as a reminder of Latvia’s time in the Soviet Union. Controversy ensued this Victory Day when the authorities attempted to remove flowers laid at the memorial, only for citizens to lay new ones.
