Police officer miraculously evades horror crash

A police officer narrowly avoided being ground into a fine dust by a BMW driving dangerously while conducting a traffic stop on a different BMW that was driving dangerously. The officer had pulled over a gray BMW for speeding in Fairfax County, Virginia when a black BMW on the opposite roadway lost control, skated across the median and impacted the gray BMW and much of the surrounding pavement. The officer, miraculously, escaped with little more than shredded nerves and the (probable) need to change his underpants.

Fortunately, despite the mangled condition of the two vehicles, no injuries were reported. The 17-year-old driver of the black BMW has been arrested for reckless driving, and may face jail time if found guilty. Fairfax Police have used the incident to remind parents of the dangers of giving high-speed cars to youngsters, while we would remind everyone of the dangers of BMW drivers.

Lucky cop indeed. If he would have been anywhere else, he would have been cut in half/crushed.

I would've jumped across the barrier to put something between the speeding car and myself. That was a lucky cop.

Yeah but that was one of those "out of the blue" moments... There are only seconds from the oncoming car - sliding out, and going in straight for the impact zone... There is not a lot of time to think or react or get out of the way....

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: Its one of those moments only those with actual exp in 'oh fuck' moments like military exp people I'd think who'd likely very quickly realized what to actually do to avoid the worst parts. Or I think they would anyway.

@Straven: Me thinks two and a bit things. 1. The driver was speeding and off their face, and came flying around the corner, saw the cop car, said, "OH Shit" and jumped on the brakes too hard to lose a lot of speed, and slide out... and b) You have to try and put yourself in the position of the cop - and how he perfecived everything from where he was....... not from the view of the camera, as a spectator to the incident...... and c) That car has skidded and spun for quite some distance on the previous road, then it's slide over the grass area (much lower friction) and then still skidding on the second piece of road.... He must have been going REALLY fast.... Like it's a bit of a approximation, but you can back calculate the original speed from a magnified video and counting the time from the start of the skid and estimating another 2 or 3 seconds past the point of impact... You can work off the model / scale of the car at different distances... etc.. @WMHarrison94:

@Straven: Have a guess at the initial speed and then see what WMHarris94 can work out...
