Bodycam footage of police throwing a bystander to the ground for filming them during an arrest has provoked outrage online over accusations of police brutality. But the cops involved claim the same footage tells a different story.

Two officers were called to a supermarket in Lancaster, California to deal with a shoplifting incident. When they arrived they found a man sitting on a rock in the parking lot, who doesn’t appear to be doing much of anything except holding some sort of container, and proceed to arrest him (or, as the officer calls it, ‘detained’). A woman approaches, filming the incident. After one of the officers threatened to punch her in the face if she didn’t stop filming, he threw her to the ground, then pepper sprayed her.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department released a statement along with the bodycam footage (which they themselves describe as ‘disturbing’), saying that ‘the encounter escalated into a use of force incident that was captured by a community member with a cell phone camera.’ They added that ‘both deputies have been re-assigned from field duty pending further administrative review.’

However, the media narrative that surrounds the footage is somewhat false, according to the two officers, and they’ve decided to lawyer up. According to their attorney, Tom Yu, ‘There’s a narrative of saying, ‘The deputies struck her down because she was recording.’ She’s not an innocent bystander. She’s involved. She’s detained in this robbery investigation.’ The woman being suspected of shoplifting is confirmed by the police statement.
