Police use slingshots to tackle marauding monkey gangs
Police in the tourist town of Lopburi, Thailand have formed a crack unit to tackle one of their most notorious problems – a horde of rival monkey gangs, being annoying and hilarious in equal measure. According to local estimates, there are around 3,500 monkeys loose in the town, and they’re all bored, leading to endless thefts, vandalism and traffic disruption. (They probably don’t pay taxes either.)
Having been unable to control the monkey mafia, police have resorted to firing clay pellets at them with slingshots. The aim isn’t to hit them, but just to frighten them off, since threatening to arrest them doesn’t seem to be working.
Despite the monkeys seemingly being impervious to arrest, officers have captured who they believe to be one of the monkey gang leaders – an alpha male named ‘Ai Krao,’ along with around a dozen other notorious perps. So far, it’s unclear whether they’re cooperating with police.
