Pope Pius XII Asked the Media to Denounce Fascist Violence Against Italian Catholics

On April 11, 1924, the Vatican’s Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Gasparri, sent a letter to the Apostolic Nuncio in Bavaria, Eugenio Pacelli, informing him of the difficult situation in Italy, the violence perpetrated by fascists against Catholic organizations, and urging him to raise awareness of the issue, including through public opinion abroad.
In this letter, the Cardinal Secretary of State, Gasparri, wrote the following to the Apostolic Nuncio in Bavaria, Pacelli:
"I consider it appropriate to inform Your Illustrious and Most Reverend Excellency that the Holy Father is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence committed by members of the Fascist Party, not only against citizens of different political ideologies but also against Catholic institutions and works that have nothing to do with politics. After the solemn condemnation and open denunciation that the Holy Father issued in his last consistory speech regarding these acts, one could have hoped that they would cease or, at the very least, that if his paternal reminder of the duties of Christian charity and tolerance were not heeded, precise and peremptory orders for prevention and repression would be issued by the competent authorities and strictly enforced.
Unfortunately, none of this has come to pass. On the contrary, unjustified attacks continue to escalate at an alarming rate and, worse still, they almost always go unpunished. The Holy Father, for his part, has done everything possible to remind all concerned of the gravity of the situation and their immense responsibilities. He has also intervened—within his means—to mitigate the moral and material consequences of this violence, assisting the victims and assuming (as in the recent case of Trani) the financial burden of reparations himself.
However, it is also necessary for Your Reverence to be informed of these events and, in fact, to ensure that some newspaper there, deploring these regrettable incidents, brings them to the attention of its readers, even if only with a brief mention. For this purpose, I am enclosing a brief summary of the recent acts of violence."
On April 22, 1924, the Apostolic Nuncio, Eugenio Pacelli, sent a letter to Cardinal Pietro Gasparri informing him that he had requested the German press to report on the violence perpetrated by fascists against Catholic institutions and works in Italy.
