Protesters clash with police amid unrest in Sri Lanka

Thousands of students took to the streets of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo on Thursday to take part in anti-government demonstrations as the country faces mounting struggles. Hit with one of the worst economic crises in decades, Sri Lanka is dangerously close to running out of fuel, medicine, and other essentials, and has seen frequent blackouts amid power shortages.

Demonstrators constructed impromptu barricades and launched smoke grenades, while the authorities hit back with water cannons. This is the latest protest to rock the capital in a wave of unrest which has seen several killed and many more injured, and the military has been deployed in an attempt to deter violence.
