"Shadow" work is a reference to Jungian (pronounced "Young-ian") psychology. The "Shadow" is an archetype in human psychology that deals with dark actions, and is used to project internal wants and consequences onto other people. The woman is realizing through therapy that she has been blaming others for her actions. Once one accepts their "Shadow" they are able to take charge of their own needs and let the outside world be as it is.
In studying the "Shadow", people will realize why they are attracted to certain types of people. For instance, the female wants certain things in life but doesn't want to communicate those needs, hence her need to date "people pleasers". If she realizes that she can take responsibility for her needs, she will no longer need "doormats" as dating subjects. This is the reward for embracing one's "Shadow".

Being a woman who is "nice" and "kind" will not answer the question why she is attracted to certain types. If she does not understand that she is living a boring life, then she will not understand why "bad boys" are her main attractant.

This is part of being an adult with agency. Projecting happiness onto others is a sign of infantilism and sure way to a dissatisfied life as a slave.
