One needs a license to hunt or to fish because basically people come from outside of this country to live and will live off of hunting and fishing until it is all gone. The European population would generally not over hunt or over fish but the new population will.

In all fairness, they use their firearms when necessary, like when a clown started shooting inside a church, and was gunned down by a security guard. Or another clown was shot down outside of a church while trying to run. Though they have their share of issues, it's not (yet) exactly like New York, New England, D.C. or Chicago, where you go to jail bc you used your weapon in self defense, at least not yet.
Many politicians in Texas know in certain parts of the state, except in the major cities, the word "democrat" is blasphemous (catching the Kung flu while running from their legislative obligations, to D.C. instead, didn't help their cause), so they game the system by becoming RINOs in the state legislature, while being nowhere near Constitutional conservatives.
