The DMIR X7 is a rare survivor of the cutting torch. Having been in active wreck service on the Missabe until 2001, it was then sold to the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad in Trego, WI.

Watch as Josh Topper of Topper Machine LLC, expertly operates this amazing crane. An amazing example of engineering, the X7 plays vital roles on the WGN.

It's good to see these things in operation - they are similar to mechanical clock work, and other machines in the days before hydraulics and powerful electronic motors, and most importantly - the earliest gears in a box (gear boxes) with dog clutches and non synchromesh gears - in the very old cars and motorbikes and boats....

You can learn a lot and most importantly - the MEN are teaching other men, how to care for the machinery AND how and why to operate it in particular ways.

There is also a difference between men who are really competent and men who are retarded cunts.....

Hmmm, Spooner Wisconsin is less than 4 hours from me. Maybe I'll drive down this summer if gas isn't $20 Gllon.

@TripeSwing: There are a lot of mueums and engineering places that offer guided tours for singles and groups.... You can learn so much from one visit a month or every 3 months - a day trip to all sorts of close by places... Just do a rando on a topic, any topic and you can learn heaps... clocks, cloth, cotton, timber, telegraphs, etc...

@TripeSwing: If you were to contact the guy and offer to pay him for an hour or twos run time of the unit and ask him if you can help him service it.... and could he show you how to operate it and what all the bits do spend a day there. There are a lot of really clever people making and operating a lot of really clever shit..... Offer to buy him a whole heap of undercoat and rust remover etc., and pay for some sand blasting and undercoat.... Spend two days there... Good shit... Come out of there making a friend, getting a greater understanding gear boxes, shift mechanisms, hydraulics, and grand father / watches and their mechanical clock movements. ASk him what they need to service and maintain it and to repaint it.... 50 liters of cable grease etc...
