My cop friends have a saying: "self-cleaning oven". It means to get out of the way and let them reap the rewards of the choices they made instead of intervening to save them. It's technically a betrayal of the spirit of law enforcement, but objectively a problem-solver and ultimately it conserves resources. You can only save people who keep destroying themselves so many times until the expense of doing so is greater than the loss from letting them fail.
