Roberto Farinacci Attacked Cardinal for Denouncing the National Socialist Persecution of the Catholic Church
The Primate of Poland, Cardinal August Hlond, was a key source of information for the Vatican regarding events in Poland after the German invasion. While he was in Rome, he wrote two crucial documents detailing the National-Socialist persecution of the Catholic Church in Poland. These documents reported that when the Gestapo stormed the Chapel of the Franciscan Sisters in Bydgoszcz, a Gestapo officer climbed into the pulpit and shouted at the sisters that the time for prayer was over because "God does not exist. If God existed, we would not be here." The documents also recounted that, while beating priests, the National-Socialists shouted: "Do you believe in God? If you do, you are an idiot. If you don’t, you are a fraud."
Roberto Farinacci, the most ardently pro-National-Socialist of the Italian fascists, attacked Cardinal Hlond in his newspaper Il Regime Fascista for denouncing the National-Socialist persecution of the Church in Poland. In his front-page editorial titled "Imprudence" in Il Regime Fascista on February 1, 1940, Farinacci wrote the following:
"The French newspapers say (naturally making a fuss) that Vatican Radio broadcast a lecture for the Americans about the atrocities committed by the Germans in Poland. We recall that even the National-Socialists extensively documented the turbulent acts carried out by Polish snipers against the regular German army and even against their own populations. However, none of that matters. We lack precise data to refute either thesis. After all, we do not have, like L’Osservatore Romano, the ease of affirming and denying episodes that arrive through suspicious channels. The day before yesterday, the Vatican’s newspaper assured that Professor Białobrzewski, allegedly murdered by the Germans, was more alive than ever and had even received members of the press to confirm his excellent health. But the French Catholic newspapers had already dedicated long obituaries to the illustrious professor!
We are pleased to note that the person supplying material to Vatican Radio is the Primate of Poland—the one who fled to Rome as soon as he smelled gunpowder. He would have done much better to remain silent, especially since the Church teaches not to flee and, if necessary, to increase the number of its martyrs. How different from the heroic and revered Cardinal Mercier, who defied everything and everyone to stay close to the Catholics of Belgium!
We simply hope for one thing: that the Primate of Poland will not be responsible for the education of our missionaries."
