Russian Paralympians return home to crowds of supporters

Russian Paralympic athletes have returned home after the decision to ban them from this year’s Beijing Winter Games due to the conflict in Ukraine.

The athletes were greeted with a heroes’ welcome at Sheremetyevo airport, with crowds of supporters waving flags and banners, clapping, cheering and singing for the 72-strong party.

Following the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes were originally told they would be able to compete as neutrals, but this decision was later reversed due to pressure and threats of boycotts from several countries.
