Russian scientists caught in powerful volcanic eruption
The explosive sound heard 20km away, the 10km tall plumes of ash, the violent shaking of the Earth. The perfect time to gather a few samples and make a daring escape via snowmobile.
The team of scientists were caught in the Bezymianny volcano eruption in Kamchatka on 7 April. Some managed to escape using snowmobiles, but others were forced to shelter under a sledge until the planet stopped trying to kill them. Despite this, they were able to collect geological samples and record seismic activity of the loud and fiery eruption.
The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team had raised the volcano's ‘Aviation Colour Code’ to orange and forecast an eruption, as the volcano had been increasingly active since the end of March.
