In terms of "good engines" - I am not an all adoring fan of Hardly Rideables...
But the 1340cc / 80 Cubic Inch motors - cleaned up a bit in terms of intake and exhaust - with reasonable silencing - they were GOOD tractable motors with gobs of torque, simply by being big motors and not outrageously high amounts of snapping and cracking power at a moments notice....
They sort of wound up to a decent highway speed and would hold it over hill and dale and into the strongest of regular head winds.....
Plus you could carry a heap of gear on them....
The big near on 2 liter / 114 cubic inch Harleys with fuel injection and electronic engine management - like I am a bit of a dumb fuck and don't care to update myself with how they come from the factory or what people are doing to them to make them really go, but they are kind of good in that they go like a motorcyle should, but they are way too dangerous simply because they have far too much power on tap, at the mere flick of a wrist...

When the HUGE 900 lb bike can do a wheelie with NO EFFORT or break traction on the rear tyre, sending that into a wheel spin at highway speeds, contrary to the bullshit that speed and noise will save your arse, it's rushing, impatience and high amounts of acceleration that get you into the shit, that you can't get out of, without crashing, where as decent tyres, decent brakes and plenty of patience, stops you from dying.....
This is why the 80 cubic inch motors were about as good as it got, in terms of adequate power levels, without being a Japanese 4 cylinder large bore suicide ride bullet....
It's like this Vincent - sure it can go really fast, and it's a freely breathing motor - but at 1000cc, it's big enough.. for sure, but it winds up to speed... and it makes for an effortlessly tractable motor on decent roads at legal speeds...
The Vincent - on one going for a ride (not me, not my bike, and not me riding it)
