It's quite fascinating that Star Trek crew always adopted the risky 'boldly go' approach instead of sending down an unman probe. After all if observation or collecting samples was all the mission, they could take a que from how the NASA did it. Their philosophy was more in line with the Age of Exploration/Discovery from 15th to 17th century AD. Back then, everyone knew the earth was flat, the sea was full of huge ship attacking monsters and all swan are white. Welcome back SoloMan. That was a long holiday.
