Students forced to leave after school becomes migrant shelter
Almost 2000 migrants have been moved from their temporary camp ahead of a fierce storm in New York. The migrants were originally housed at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field, a former airport, but have been moved via bus convoy to nearby James Madison High School until the danger has passed. However, this means that the school’s students have been forced to study remotely while the migrants are housed in the building.
A city spokesperson called the relocation a ‘protective measure,’ but locals have voiced concerns at the move. One local resident complained that ‘There’s 1,900 people getting thrown into my neighborhood, half a block from where I live and we don’t know who they are.’ Additionally, a local woman was seen shouting at the buses of migrants as they passed, angry that they had kicked all the kids out of school.
