So, one big problem is that Mr. Popular is usually a good-looking guy who has been there building connections since childhood. To be a loner means you are shut out; you have no friends, so nobody wants to be your friend, final offer. But there is an option I saw some people take, and it worked: you can be feared. And the best target is to pick is someone somewhat popular. Then, by getting into a fight with him, you become notable by association, albeit as a negative figure. You can then snowball that negative clout into befriending that person's enemies.
Now, this is illegal and I don't condone it, but it worked. It's got a huge downside, which is that you now have that guy's friends wanting to fight you. But this might be worth it to have 90% of people walk on eggshells.
