In terms of grand strategy NATO won in Ukraine in 2014, and the last decade has just been about the scope of that victory.

It's as if Russia installed a puppet government in the UK, and then forced NATO to kill all of UK's fighting age men so that they couldn't be used in an attack on NATO. Sure NATO stopped the threat of the UK being used against them, but they still lost a major component of their military alliance, and had to spend vast amounts of blood and treasure to do it.

That said, we will see how this all plays out in the longer term with the Nth order impacts, such as global dedollarization, strengthened Russo-Sino relations, Russia fucking with America in the Middle East, etc. However, as of now, Ukraine is a significant victory for NATO, and the 2014 coup really neuters the claims that Putin is some 12D chess mastermind.
