In my opinion the ancient Persian's were the most cruel and creative with torture and execution. Scaphism is truly horrific. Basically encase someone in a barrel with head leg's arm's exposed, fill barrel with honey and let the person be eaten alive by insect's for months. Usually they would go insane from feeling the insects consuming them alive.

It's a sad commentary on humanity that the most time, effort and treasure has gone into murdering and killing each other.
