If you look at the back ground from 43 - 44 seconds on pause, when the guy is saying good by to the Mrs and his child, look at the forest behind them - that surrounds the town...
This is why Australian bush fires are so fucking terrifying......
The eucalyptus trees have leaves full of oil... AND when the bush fires come through, usually there are HIGH winds, lots of bark and sticks and dead leaves on the ground - really thick and bone dry.... and the winds are usually very hot... like 35*C plus...
Then a fire starts up and it usually goes along the ground until it gets big enough and hot enough to start going up into the tree tops and they catch fire.....
It's called "Crowning" and the speed of the fire across the land just jumps into a whole new dimension...
So the litter on the forest floor creates a bed that ignited the whole forest from the ground to the tops of the trees and the wind speeds - of the fire - really start to pick up into a cyclone type speeds and the usually hot winds pick up the tree leaves etc., that are getting thrown way up in the sky and then dropping them down to start more fires ahead of the main fire...
So you just get this fucking nightmare.....
This is why I am a bit alarmed at living in the middle of the firest like this - it's OK in the wetter areas, while it's wet, but when it's HOT and DRY and has been for a long time and there are the hot winds of summer and there is loads of leaf litter on the floor of the forest....
Fuck me - I have been through places that were exactly in these condtions - on foot and bicycle - only a few months before they burned to the ground..... The temperature was 53*C in the shade and the natural wind speed was 120 Kmh on the ground all day... and half of Australia was on fire....
I think the fucking country was on fire for 3 and a half weeks ...
They still have wood chopping races and one of the cuts, is to climb what looks like an 8 meter wooden pole - and they climb it in stages, using standing boards.... and then they cut the top off, go back down a level and cut a bit more off and so on and so forth..... I have yet to understand how the standing boards stay in... And the Balance + Axe + Great Heights.....
"When they cut down a tree - the reason why they all run a long way away from it, is because although the tree ought to fall in a particular direction, sometimes it just doesn't want too. And if your dumb enough to be close by, it might kick back and kill you. That's why."

Damn that’s some real work.
God bless chainsaws.
To paraphrase my old man who used to do this....
