The point of the leak was to give Trump the grounds to sue and have the charges dismissed, for there to be no trial. Why? Because his opponents never wanted a trial. If there's a trial, there's discovery, depositions, evidence, and witnesses called. They don't want that; it would expose their witch-hunt for what it is.

What they really want is to poison the well, the public's perception, to smear Donald Trump as part of the larger effort to deny him the election. And when he succeeds in having the charges dismissed, the case thrown out, they'll pivot yet again, claiming slick, slippery, slimy Donald Trump and his high-priced attorneys made a mockery of justice by having the case thrown out. It's all about damaging Trump's image to make him un-electable, to stop him from becoming President. That's their strategy.
