As a Mechanical Engineer who has had numerous hobbies for as long as I can remember plus being a broke bastard having to fix OPR if I want something I am continually amazed at just how fucking useless the average punter is at doing anything practical.
A very good website to look at is https://www.homemadetools.net/ good people and a variety of things to make. Plenty of help with a project as well.
One of those cheap 100 piece screwdriver tip kits has everything needed to work on anything. Most are surprisingly good quality. A T-handle is all that is needed. Allen,(Hex),keys get ball-ended. For sockets get a selection of Metrinch as they fit anything and are flank drive. 1/4"drive will do a lot and only a few 3/8"drive are needed. A 10" single-cut file with one safe edge is well worth the weight as you can modify things, sharpen knives, axes etc.
