Violent brawl erupts at Paris airport over Kurdish man's expulsion
A violent clash unfolded at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on Wednesday, sparked by attempts to prevent the expulsion of a Kurdish man under a deportation order. Footage captured chaotic scenes as a convoy transporting the Kurdish activist was attacked by approximately twenty individuals. Videos circulating online show the chaos that resulted, with a mass brawl splintering off into dozens of individual fist fights that spread chaos near one of Terminal 1’s many fine gift shops.
Protesters, including many representatives of the Communist Party, fought not only with airport security as they tried to breach security barriers, but also the National Removal Unit (Unesi) and soldiers from Operation Sentinelle, France’s anti-terror detachment. The clash stemmed from concerns that Firaz Korkmaz, the Kurdish man facing deportation, would face torture and imprisonment upon his return to Turkey. Three airport agents sustained minor injuries during the altercation, and Korkmaz was successfully deported.
