Violent cartel-linked gang put victim’s girlfriend in explosive vest

A British millionaire has been freed in Ecuador after being kidnapped by a cartel-linked criminal gang, who put his girlfriend in an explosive vest to obtain ransom money from his family. The Los Tiguerones gang, kidnapped Armstrong and his girlfriend, Katherine Paola Santos, after Armstrong refused to pay a monthly protection fee to the gang. Armstrong and Santos were kidnapped on Saturday by 15 armed men, forced into the back of a car, and taken to parts unknown.

Santos was released by the gang and sent to Armstrong’s son to demand ransom, wearing an explosive vest. She was told by the gang that, if the ransom was not paid, the vest would be detonated. A video of bomb disposal experts removing the world’s worst clothing was later released online. Armstrong himself was picked up by police on a nearby road, after an international effort to free Colin that was spearheaded by British intelligence.
